So you’re thinking of popping the question, but don’t have the ring yet…? Luckily Loan Star Jewellery & Loans have jewellery experts on site that have decades of experience in not only buying and selling gold in Edmonton, but also choosing the perfect ring to give your one and only.
When you know it’s time to buy the ring start doing some recon work: what types of jewellery does she wear? What shape of stone would she prefer? Does she like diamonds? What types of metal does she wear every day? You can also enlist the help of her close friends and ask these questions. You will want to choose something that suits her style and her vision of the perfect ring.
When we talk about shape, we mean shape of the stone. Diamonds are the most popular stone for an engagement ring, but tastes and trends have evolved to now include coloured diamonds, rubies, sapphires, emeralds and amethysts. The shapes that are more popular are round and princess (or square), but other shapes include:
Find out what shape she would prefer and start your ring search there.
Engagement rings are generally available in a couple of different types of metal: gold (yellow, white and rose) and platinum. Make sure that the colour of metal you choose is something she wears already on a regular basis. Platinum is more expensive but a lot heartier than gold. 14K and 10K gold is harder and less malleable than 18K or 24K gold, and also less expensive.
The old “two months’ salary” rule is just that – tired and old. Spend what you can afford to get a great ring. Diamonds are expensive, there’s no way around that. But the great thing about making a visit to our Edmonton Pawn Shop is we can offer you a great deal on a beautiful piece of jewellery.

Working in at a pawn shop, we see all sorts of people come in, and talk to Edmontonians on a daily basis about what we do and how we do it. There are definitely many misconceptions about pawn shops that we’d love to clear up. After all, we aren’t in a movie –this is real life with real customers… People who we love building relationships with and working with as long as possible. Check out some of the most common myths circulating about pawn shops today:
Pawn shops deal in stolen goods. What many people don’t know is that we actually have a license to buy, sell and provide small amount, short-term loans. We don’t want stolen goods in our shop! We work very closely with the police to make sure that there is no movement of stolen goods through our premises. We also verify EVERYTHING with each customer: name address, phne number, serial numbers, etc. Our reputation is at stake and we wouldn’t do anything to jeopardize that.
Our pawn shop is a “last resort”. Loan Star provides quick and easy loans to people without credit cheques or late fee penalties. If you can’t or don’t want to pay your loan back, we keep your collateral. There aren’t any legal consequences if a loan isn’t repaid, so some people would just rather deal with that than a bank!
We also buy and sell high quality merchandise and have a full operating store with a great variety of objects. People of all income levels shop here because we have wonderful things at great prices.
Pawn shops want to rip people off. This is not the case. We love it when people come and pick up their items again after a loan –we don’t want to make that impossible. And we always love to purchase high quality items from people. But the reality is, we can’t pay you retail price for your items, even if they’re in original packaging and unused. When items are purchased from retail outlets, they are already majorly marked up so when we buy them we have to judge what would be a fair price to you but also leave enough room for us to turn a profit because we are similar to a retail outlet. This is how pawnshops make money and are able to lend money. But rest assured that at Laon Star we will always give you the best deal we can give.
At Loan Star Exchange, we consider ourselves to be the real pawn stars in Edmonton… not just because we are experts in buying and selling, but because we go above and beyond to source out any and all information that will help us and our clients make an informed decision. So what is the difference between the “Pawn Stars” you see on TV and Loan Star Exchange? While there are certain similarities (we also have a grumpy old man in the shop), the reality of the Edmonton pawn shop industry is that it’s not quite as glamorous as it is portrayed on the tube. We certainly buy and sell the same kinds of gold, silver and finery as sthe shop on television, but we do it with a little less drama. Here are some of our main differences from Gold & Silver Pawn:
- We don’t have Chumlee working here (unfortunately). Although we’re sure he would provide hours of entertainment for our customers.
- We don’t have access to all of the various “experts” that Gold & Silver Pawn does, but only because we ARE the resident experts! We do our best to research all of our purchases and sales if need be.
- On average, most of our transactions are below the $2000 range. We don’t generally buy or sell antiques worth tens of thousands or hot air balloons.
- Instead of Super Bowl Rings, we carry Grey Cup rings, which are almost as valuable! We also have a great selection of other quality gold, silver, diamonds… You name it, we’ll probably have something to suit your needs. We are gold buyers after all.
- We don’t have Loan Star Exchange t-shirts and none of us has written a book. We do however have some pretty interesting stories about our combined 45+ years in the Edmonton pawn shop business. You don’t need to book an appointment with us, you can just come on down and chat.
Even though we’re not on contract with the History Channel and we don’t have mugs with our faces on them, we’re pretty entertaining and extremely knowledgeable. But if you do happen to have a hot air balloon, super bowl ring or 1960 car owned by Steve McQueen for sale, we’d love to see your wares!
Someone told me to use this space on our website to let everyone know what I am thinking about these days. I personally wouldn’t think people care about the ramblings of a pawnbroker in an Edmonton pawn shop, but if you are the curious type, maybe you should just read on!!
If you are reading this, then our new website has gone live, and after months of planning and writing, is finally ready for you! I’m going to use this space on the site to do a lot of different things.
– Maybe something has pissed me off and I need to vent.
– It could be a really cool video I saw online and felt the need to share it with the world.
– How about something somebody said in the store and I feel that I absolutely must repeat it!!
In truth, it will probably be a very boring post on the state of our Edmonton Oilers, or a weather report, but hey, you never know, right? Stay Tuned…….« Previous Page
